Match Cutting Capacity to Your Stock

The first specification to check is cutting capacity at 90 degrees: the maximum round or square section the saw can cut in one pass. A small saw like the W5018WA handles 100 mm round stock for maintenance work; the W5023M cuts up to 270 mm round; a heavy model like the W4028 takes 280 mm round and 280 x 300 mm square. For miter cutting, the capacity at 45 degrees is smaller — check both numbers.

Blade Size and Blade Speed

The blade is the saw's cutting edge and its main consumable. Longer, wider blades with more teeth per inch (TPI) give straighter cuts and longer life. Blade speed matters: low speeds (around 25-40 m/min) suit hard steel and large sections; higher speeds (60-100 m/min) cut aluminum and small sections faster. Multi-speed machines like the W5020 (four speeds) or the two-speed W5023M cover a wide material range.

Motor Power and Frame Construction

More kilowatts cut faster and handle harder material without stalling. Solid-cast construction dampens vibration, which directly improves cut straightness and blade life. WIST band saws use cast frames with silent operation and user-friendly IP54 safety switches with low-voltage release.

Angle Capability for Miter Cuts

If you cut frames, brackets or angle stock, check the saw's angle range and whether the table or the bow rotates. Models like the W5027 cut from -45 to 60 degrees; the W5023M offers 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 degrees. An angle scale with positive stops speeds up repetitive miter work.

Hydraulic Feed and Coolant

A hydraulic support cylinder with an infinitely variable throttle valve (standard on WIST saws) lets the bow descend smoothly and automatically, controlling feed rate by material. A coolant pump (available on several models) keeps the blade cool and flushes chips for longer blade life and cleaner cuts.
