Four-Spindle Turning Machines: 2026 Guide to Types, Price & Applications
Four-spindle turning machines can quadruple your production output. Here's what they cost, when to buy one and how they compare to single-spindle lathes.
What Is a Four-Spindle Turning Machine?
A four-spindle turning machine is a CNC lathe that processes four workpieces simultaneously — one in each spindle. Instead of turning one part at a time, you load four bars, and the machine turns all four in parallel. This can boost throughput 3–4x compared to a standard single-spindle CNC lathe.
Multi-spindle turning machines are used in high-volume production: automotive components, fittings, fasteners, shafts, bushings and any parts needed in quantities of thousands per month.
How Does a 4-Spindle CNC Lathe Work?
Four spindles are arranged in line on the same bed. Each spindle has its own turret or tool post. The bar feeder pushes stock through all four spindles at once. As each spindle completes a turning operation, the parts are ejected simultaneously and a new bar segment is fed in.
Because all four spindles run the same program, cycle time per part is essentially the same as a single-spindle lathe — but you produce four parts per cycle instead of one.
Applications of Four-Spindle Turning Machines
· Automotive: shafts, sleeves, valve seats, spark plug bodies
· Plumbing: fittings, connectors, adapters, valve bodies
· Hardware: nuts, bolts, spacers, threaded components
· Hydraulics: pistons, cylinders, hydraulic fittings
· Electronics: connector pins, shafts for motors and sensors
Four-Spindle vs Single-Spindle: Key Differences
| Feature | Single-Spindle | Four-Spindle |
|---|---|---|
| Output | 1 part per cycle | 4 parts per cycle |
| Price | $15,000 – $50,000 | $80,000 – $250,000+ |
| Setup time | Quick | Longer |
| Best batch size | 10–500 parts | 5,000+ parts |
| Floor space | Compact | Large |
Price Range in 2026
A Chinese-made four-spindle CNC turning center typically costs $80,000–$150,000 FOB, depending on spindle bore, control system (GSK/Fanuc/Siemens) and accessories (bar feeder, chip conveyor, catcher).
European and Japanese brands (Mazak, DMG Mori, Citizen) start at $250,000+ and can exceed $500,000 for fully automated cells.
Is a 4-Spindle Lathe Worth It?
Calculate the payback: if you currently run 3 single-spindle machines producing the same part, a 4-spindle machine may replace all three — and reduce labor, floor space and tooling cost per part.
It's worth it when:
- You produce 5,000+ identical parts per month
- Parts are simple (turning only, no complex milling)
- You're paying for multiple operators running separate machines
- You need consistent quality across high volumes
It's not worth it for:
- Low-volume or one-off parts
- Parts requiring milling, drilling or complex live tooling
- Workshops that change jobs frequently (setup time kills efficiency)
